Designing with light involves much more than understanding applications and footcandles. This seminar explores the many ways designers think about light as a design medium, describe light to themselves and others, and use light to create engaging environments. It explains how designers use qualities of light, light interacting with architecture and interior design, and lighting concepts. A book signing will follow this one-hour session.

A panel featuring members of the Texas Society of Architects (TxA) will showcase projects and design practices that illustrate how ladies are leading the way in Lone Star architecture and design. As the percentage of registered architects who are women continues to trend upward nationally, this session celebrates Texas-based professionals from a range of backgrounds who are at the top of their game and inspiring the next generation.

Lighting design is not merely selecting fixtures; it’s enhancing an environment, telling a story, and guiding users through the space. When done by professional designers, lighting influences users to interact with the space and evokes an emotional response. Lighting designers can be challenged by prioritizing a human-centric approach and conceptualizing the entire design vision effectively. Unlike most building materials and finishes, lighting designers cannot provide a tangible swatch to architects and owners for consideration and understanding of design strategies. Therefore, communicating the value of lighting design is crucial to gaining buy-in and overcoming preconceived notions from architects and project stakeholders.

Light Reach proves that electricity poverty does not have to equate with light poverty.

The model developed by the global solar lighting design initiative Light Reach uses an affordable, replicable and rapidly deployable project model that brings together lighting experts, local users and partners in collaborative design processes. Lit outdoor public spaces support communities’ social, cultural and recreational livelihood, increase well-being and reduce the negative impact of light poverty.

Light Reach is on a mission to advance lighting justice and foster a greater philanthropic culture in our industry: lighting professionals are well-positioned to bring positive social change and facilitate people’s access to light with impactful lighting initiatives that have real short- and long-term personal, educational and economic benefits.

This presentation will include programs in Puerto Rico and Lebanon as case studies and related topics for field research; showcase a path for lighting design activism to empower all with lighting equality; and propose what philanthropy, social engagement and corporate responsibility can look like in the international lighting community.

Having over 40 years of design experience, I was blessed by being mentored by some of the early lighting designer's who openly shared their design principles with me. Working directly under Raymond Grenald and volunteering with names like Leslie Wheel, Howard Brandston, Nancy Clanton, Naomi Miller, Randy Burkett and other luminaires, the speaker will share their tips of the trade. For example, decades before the WELL recommendation of lighting the walls, Ray Grenald would stress the importance of vertical illumination of architectural planes. Likewise, Leslie Wheel would toss out lighting awards is a single scallop occurred on a dropped soffit.

The speaker will reach out to other IALD and IES Fellows to ensure a variety of lighting design tidbits.

This workshop challenges the notion that daylight is irrelevant to lighting design. Contrary to the belief that lighting systems need to be optimized for nighttime conditions, we demonstrate how daylighting can enhance your lighting design, reduce energy consumption, and be profitable in doing so. Participants will engage in intuitive exercises and use daylight metrics to explore the impact of daylight on their lighting designs. This course will empower designers to use their own intuition without being encumbered with complex software. Join us to reconceptualize daylight for lighting design and learn how to profit from it effectively.
